BACK TO SCHOOL 2011
Environmental Disasters Don't Have to Be Educational Disasters
Hurricanes? Earthquakes? Floods? Fires? Flu? Pandemic? School closed? School damaged?  Environmental disasters don't have to be educational disasters. Children can continue learning.

Lessons of the 1937 Texas School Explosion Project

  • Make March 18 a day to tell the story of the 1937 Texas School Explosion and study its lessons.

  • Promote leadership and partnerships for safety in your school.

  • Update your school's values and technical skills for 21st century citizens.

Nominate the 2012 Healthy Schools Hero

The Hero Award was created as an annual opportunity to tell the story of the 1937 TX School Explosion and to start conversations about the need to identify and eliminate chemical hazards and unhealthy conditions in today's schools.

The Hero Award is part of an ongoing campaign to promote conversations that bring 'safety' from the margins to the core of school curriculum and community culture. The goal is to strengthen parent involvement and community partnerships to establish the 21st century standards and safeguards that can protect children from deadly explosions, fires, chemical spills and toxic exposures.

2011 Healthy Schools Hero Dr. Dwight Peavey

Teachers who enforce safety rules not only avoid accidents in school but they give their students the skills and attitudes necessary to safeguard their future families and co-workers and "to live safer healthier longer lives."  (Jim Kaufman, Lab Safety Institute)

The world endures solely by virtue of the breath of school children. (Talmud)
